ALDOT is hopeful SR-63 could reopen by early July following a bridge replacement just south of US-280 in Alexander City.

Closed since May 2025, engineers are hoping to reopen the 1,600-foot section of SR-63 by July 4, if weather conditions allow.

Crews are working to reopen SR-63 just south of US-280 in Alexander City.

Construction kicked off to convert the original 1931 bridge to a culvert in April 2025.

The new bottomless arch bridge culvert over Sugar Creek will be 120 feet long, 36 feet wide and 17 feet tall.

Originally set to close for eight months, a few issues have delayed construction.

They include utility conflicts, unsuitable soils, contractor’s means and methods, plus weather interruptions.

Motorists are encouraged to use SR-128 and Coven Abbett Highway as a detour to US-280 (see map above).

ALDOT would like to thank the public for their patience during this important bridge upgrade.
