The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) has started a resurfacing and Road Diet project on US-431 through Lafeyette.

The project stretches from just south of SR-50 to half a mile before CR-93.

Crews are resurfacing US-431 in Lafayette

In addition to the 3.2 miles of resurfacing, this construction also includes pedestrian safety upgrades from 2nd Avenue to Alabama Avenue. That work will address drainage, curb, gutter and sidewalk improvements.

The project will implement what is called a “Road Diet” from Alabama Avenue to SR-77 in downtown. This section will change the 4-lane undivided to a 3-lane roadway.  The 3-lane section will decrease the speed differentials, and the middle lane will provide a reversible turn lane for left turns in either direction.

Crews started milling off the old driving surface last week.

This work will require lane shifts and temporary closures of some on-street parking. There will also be daily lane closures of SR-1 within the project limits during the resurfacing phase.

Motorists should adjust arrival/departure times.

Please observe work zone speed limits, work zone signs, and use caution in this area.
