In accordance with Alabama’s 2026 Work Zone Safety Act, the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) and the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) are implementing a pilot program to use photographic speed enforcement near milepost 209 on I-65 in Chilton County at the Walnut Creek Bridge replacement project.

The Alabama Work Zone Safety Act (Act 2026-475) established the pilot program to evaluate whether photographic speed enforcement can reduce excessive speeding and improve safety for highway workers and motorists in an active interstate work zone. Under the law, the program applies to vehicles recorded traveling more than 10 mph over the posted speed limit.

ALDOT is responsible for the transportation and work zone components of the pilot. ALEA will review evidence of potential violations and handle civil citations and the hearing process. If a citation is issued, the registered vehicle owner will receive a notice by mail explaining the violation and options for resolving it. Violations under the pilot program are civil penalties and do not add points to a driver’s license or result in license suspension or revocation.

As the program is implemented, motorists should follow posted signs, obey the speed limit, stay alert and allow extra following distance.

In the coming weeks, ALEA will announce additional details about the warning period and exact date civil citations will begin.
