In addition to the danger of icy pavements, icy trees may fall into roadways, further impacting travel in northwest Alabama.

With temperatures dropping drastically, ALDOT warns of the potential for extended and widespread icing and advises motorists to avoid unnecessary travel until conditions improve.

ALDOT responded to several reports of icy trees falling on highways in Lauderdale County overnight and this morning.

Sleet and freezing rain hit the northwest corner of the state hardest Saturday. ALDOT crews worked late into the night clearing ice from roads and spreading salt to help prevent refreezing.

But along the roadsides, many trees remain heavily ice-laden and at risk of falling.

Trees that fall into roadways can pose crash hazards and block or delay ALDOT treatment operations and other emergency response.
