The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) is planning the final total US-280 closure at Pump House Road to set the last two bridge girders.

On Friday, June 5, crews will shut down all US-280 lanes in both directions at Pump House Road at 11 p.m.

Westbound lanes will remain closed through the morning of Monday, June 8.  Eastbound lanes will reopen on Saturday and Sunday mornings at 5 a.m., then close again at 11 p.m.

ALDOT will shut down US-280 in both directions to set bridge girders at Pump House Road on June 5.

While the eastbound lanes are shut down at night, so will the Pump House Road eastbound off-ramp. Drivers will be directed to exit the highway at Green Valley Road, instead.

Crews will also close Pump House Road at night while the crane lifts the new girders over the bridge.

All US-280 lanes at Pump House Road will reopen no later than 6 a.m. on Monday, June 8.

Wider Bridge Features

This phase is part of the overall US-280 widening project to increase capacity from Lakeshore Parkway to I-459.

In the fall, the contractor installed the first three of five bridge girders before later demolishing the old span.

The final two girders will make room on the new bridge for a center turn lane and sidewalk over the highway.

The contractor has worked extremely hard to complete the Pump House Road bridge replacement several months ahead of schedule.

Major delays are expected and ALDOT encourages travelers to begin planning alternate paths through this corridor now.

Motorists should take I-459 to I-65 to Lakeshore Parkway and back to US-280 as a main detour heading west. Drivers traveling east should reverse route order for eastbound trips

ALDOT thanks the public for their patience while we increase US-280 capacity by early October.
