Significant progress is underway on the I-65 widening project in Calera as part of the Alabama Department of Transportation’s ongoing efforts to improve traffic flow, safety, and capacity along this heavily traveled corridor.
Contractors are grading the median of I-65, a critical phase of work that sets the foundation for additional lanes. Crews will construct one new lane in each direction on either side of a newly installed concrete median barrier. The grading work, visible in the photos below, ensures a stable base for the future roadway expansion.

This operation will continue progressing northward in the coming weeks. In tandem with the median work, preparations are also underway for a major bridge replacement project. ALDOT will replace the existing bridges over the railroad in Calera with new, wider structures, designed to accommodate three lanes of traffic in each direction. These structures will help support current and future traffic demands while also enhancing overall safety for motorists.
Once completed, the I-65 widening project will provide substantial benefits for both daily commuters and commercial vehicles by easing congestion. This corridor is a key economic route for central Alabama, and the improvements will support continued regional growth and mobility.
Motorists should drive with caution in the work zone and to be alert for changing traffic patterns as construction continues.
