The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT), in partnership with the City of Spanish Fort, will begin a roadway widening project on SR-225 from Oakridge Drive to General Canby Boulevard starting Monday, August 4, weather permitting.
This improvement is part of the Alabama Transportation Rehabilitation and Improvement Program (ATRIP), a statewide effort to enhance public roads through targeted investments that boost safety, ease traffic, and support local growth.
The project will expand SR-225 to include a center turn lane, helping reduce congestion and improve travel for drivers during peak traffic times. Additional work includes grading and drainage upgrades.
Construction will begin at the south end of the project near Oakridge Drive and continue north toward General Canby Blvd, with most of the work focused on the northbound side of the roadway.

What to Expect:
- Project start date: Monday, August 4, 2025 ( Weather permitting.)
- Work hours: 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on weekdays
- Traffic impacts: Daily lane closures with flaggers directing traffic
- Work area: Northbound SR-225 from Oakridge Dr to General Canby Blvd
- Estimated completion: Spring 2026
- Contractor: Southern Land Development, LLC
- Project cost: $1.3 million
ALDOT and the City of Spanish Fort have planned the work with care, taking into account rush hour and school traffic to help limit delays.
Motorists are urged to:
- Follow posted traffic signs and flaggers
- Slow down in work zones
- Stay alert and use extra caution when traveling through the area
“We thank residents and all drivers for their patience during construction,” said an ALDOT spokesperson James Gordon. “These improvements will make travel safer and more efficient for everyone in the long run.”
