The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) will begin Phase 2 of electrical and lighting system upgrades in the Bankhead Tunnel on Monday, August 4, continuing efforts to modernize and improve the tunnel’s infrastructure.
This phase follows previous upgrades completed during Phase 1 and will replace aged lighting fixtures and electrical components throughout the tunnel.

Closures to Begin Week of August 4:
- Nightly Full Closures:
8 p.m. – 5 a.m., starting Tuesday, August 5 until work is completed. (Nightly work will take place Sunday through Thursday.) - Full Weekend Closure:
Begins Friday, August 8 at 8 p.m.
Ends Monday, August 11 at 5 a.m. - Labor Day Adjustment:
No closures scheduled during Labor Day weekend to accommodate holiday travel
Alternate Routes:
Motorists are advised to use the following alternate routes and follow posted detour signage:
- I-10 Bayway and Wallace Tunnel
- Cochrane–Africatown USA Bridge (US-90/98)
- Africatown Blvd, I-165, Water Street, and Government Boulevard
Drivers should plan ahead, use caution and reduce speed in the work zone.
