ALDOT announces a temporary closure of the US-29 overpass at I-85 (Exit 64) in Opelika, beginning Tuesday, April 22, 2025. The closure is expected to last approximately one week, weather permitting.
The closure allows the contractor to perform necessary maintenance on the bridge deck. The bridge rehabilitation will utilize hydrodemolition, a method known for its efficiency, safety, and precision.
During the closure period, all traffic will be restricted from using the US-29 overpass at I-85. Motorists will be able utilize I-85 as a detour during this time. ALDOT took comments from the public regarding this project in July 2024 and modified the detour since that meeting.
Oversized loads will not be permitted to access the construction limits on I-85 during this time.
Additionally, there may be periods when I-85 is reduced to one lane in each direction at Exit 64. If this occurs, vehicles will exit onto the off-ramp and re-enter I-85 via the on-ramp to safely bypass the work zone.
ALDOT urges drivers to plan accordingly for travel delays and remain cautious around people and equipment in the work zone.
Prior to the closure, temporary message boards will be installed on Thursday, April 17, 2025, to inform the traveling public of the upcoming work.
