The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) is working to extend the life of the Dauphin Island Bridge, a key route for residents and visitors. Built in 1982, the bridge has endured four decades of exposure to harsh saltwater environment. This project will ensure it remains safe and reliable for years to come.

Key Repairs

The Dauphin Island Bridge rehabilitation and corrosion mitigation project will include typical repairs that normally occur on structures subjected to saltwater conditions such as concrete spall repairs as well as joint and crack repairs. To better ensure the structure’s integrity is maintained for years to come, the Department will have a protective zinc coating applied to protect against continued corrosion.

Protecting the Environment

ALDOT is taking steps to minimize environmental impact, including:

  • Using a containment system while applying protective coatings.
  • Training workers to observe and respond to any wildlife safely if encountered.
  • Working directly from the bridge in sensitive areas to avoid disturbing habitats.

Project Timeline and Cost

In the coming months construction equipment, including scaffolding will be staged at the site.

  • Estimated completion: 3-4 years (depending on weather and environmental factors).
  • Cost: $33.7 million (80% federally funded, 20% state-funded, no local funds required).

Traffic and Safety

  • At times, only one lane will be open.
  • When necessary, traffic shifts will occur, and the speed limit will be reduced to 35 mph for safety.
  • Drivers should expect possible delays and use caution.

Maritime Impact

Boat traffic through the designated Intracoastal Waterway channel will not be affected during the project.

ALDOT appreciates the public’s patience as they work to keep this important bridge safe and reliable. Stay updated at ALDOTNews or follow ALDOT on social media.
