The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) continues to make significant strides on the Linden Bypass, the first phase of the West Alabama Highway initiative introduced by Governor Kay Ivey in 2021.
This transformative project enhances safety, boosts regional connectivity and drives economic opportunities in rural Alabama.
Designed to alleviate congestion in downtown Linden, the bypass provides a safer route for vehicles navigating the area. Here’s an overview of the project’s scope and the latest updates:
Project Scope
The Linden Bypass consists of two key sections:
- South Project: Extends from US-43 south of Linden to SR-28.
- North Project: Stretches from SR-28 to SR-69.
Together, these sections span 7.7 miles, forming a four-lane divided highway. Once complete, this route will become SR-303, a vital segment of the new West Alabama Highway.
Current Progress
South Project
In the coming month a traffic shift is anticipated in order to complete a tie in with US 43.
- Crews have completed bridge construction for the AGR and MNBR railway overpasses.
- Grading is finished, with paving on the new roadway nearly complete.
- Work has begun on tie-ins to existing roads at US-43 and SR-28, with some traffic disruptions anticipated.
- The re-alignment of the SR-69 and US-43 intersection is in progress.

North Project
- Bridge construction at Chickasaw Bogue Creek, the largest of three crossings, is complete.
- Two bridges over Whirl Creek are under construction and expected to finish by the end of 2025.
- Crews have completed clearing, with grading finalized on 50% of the project.
