The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) has added new traffic enhancements to the center turn lane along US-31 in Spanish Fort, which opened in August 2024. The improvements come in response to growing concerns about driver behaviors and improper use of the lane during peak traffic periods.

Motorists will now notice newly installed traffic delineators—vertical markers placed at strategic points within the center turn lane. The intent of these additions are to mark where drivers should start their left turn movement. As an added benefit, these traffic devices will also discourage drivers from misusing the lane as a passing lane.

Recent Findings

Following the project’s opening, in consultation with local law enforcement, ALDOT conducted a safety study. The study observed how the new lane is being used by drivers. Funded with federal Highway Safety funds, the goal of the original widening project was to make the route safer for drivers and turners.

Instead, the findings show a troubling trend of abuse or illegal driving behavior, particularly during heavy congestion. This misuse creates conflict with drivers attempting legal left turns, increasing the risk of crashes.

“Center turn lanes are built to allow safer left-hand turns and more efficient thru-lanes, not for bypassing traffic,” said ALDOT spokesperson James Gordon. “When drivers use them to pass, they put themselves and others at great risk of an accident, not to mention, the behavior is illegal.”

Law enforcement agencies in the area report observing—and issuing warnings for—this illegal behavior.

What Drivers Need to Know

Motorists are to be aware that these vertical markers are not to be crossed or driven over. Additionally, violators may be subject to citations and fines for improper lane use or illegal vehicle movements. Law enforcement officers will continue monitoring the corridor to ensure compliance and protect public safety.

ALDOT urges all motorists to drive attentively and respectfully, especially during busy travel times.

“These changes are not about punishing drivers,” Gordon said. “They are about preventing crashes and protecting the people who live, work and travel through this area every day.”
