Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) crews have reopened the southbound Chalkville Mountain Road (Exit 141) ramps off I-59 in Trussville.
ALDOT has worked to meet a goal to reopen the busy ramps by August 29 and finished three days early.
In July, ALDOT shut down the ramps as part of the larger 3.8-mile widening of I-59 between Exit 141 and Edwards Lake Road on I-459.
The widened I-59 southbound lanes themselves should be open to traffic by the Thanksgiving holiday. Until then, motorists should continue using alternate routes near Exit 141, when possible.
ALDOT appreciates the contractor’s efficiency in reopening the ramps so quickly to minimize the impact of the ongoing I-59 enhancements on drivers.
Work to widen the northbound lanes begins in 2026.
The overall $70.37 million widening project should alleviate congestion on I-59 in the Trussville community. ALDOT expects drivers will be taking advantage of three lanes in both directions by the end of 2026.
