ALDOT closing US-280 traffic at Pumphouse Road for bridge girder installation

ALDOT to shut down US-280 at Pumphouse Road to install new bridge girders.
Nov 05

The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) is reaching a significant milestone in its ongoing US-280 widening project by setting the first girders for the new Pumphouse Road Bridge.

This work requires a total traffic closure for crews to safely install the 100-foot beams across the width of the highway.

Beginning at 11 p.m. on Friday, November 14, 2025, ALDOT is closing all US-280 lanes at Pumphouse Road.

Eastbound lanes will remain shut down through the morning of Monday, November 17.

Westbound lanes will reopen each morning at 5 a.m. before closing again at 11 p.m.

ALDOT should open all US-280 lanes at Pumphouse Road by 6 a.m. on Monday, November 17.

The current Pumphouse Road Bridge, its eastbound off-ramp and westbound on-ramp will remain open during this work.

Major delays are expected and ALDOT encourages travelers to begin planning alternate paths through this corridor now.

Motorists should use Lakeshore Parkway to I-65 to I-459 to US-280 as a main detour.

Following next week’s night-time girder installation, most of the Pumphouse Road Bridge replacement will happen during the day as promised.

There will be additional weekend road closures to complete the phased bridge construction in the future.

ALDOT thanks the public for their patience during this project to increase US-280 capacity when complete in Fall 2026.
