TIMs Training: Working together to keep Alabama roads safe

Nov 19

When a crash or breakdown happens on the road, every minute counts.

Every minute that an incident is on the roadway, the chance of a secondary crash increases by 2.8%. The longer vehicles and responders are stopped, the longer drivers are also stuck in traffic.

That’s what makes Traffic Incident Management (TIMs) Training so important. TIMs is a program that brings together the people who respond to roadway incidents — police officers, firefighters, paramedics, towing operators, transportation crews, and communications staff — and teaches them how to work safely and efficiently as one team.

Why TIMs Training Matters

TIMS keep everyone safer by teaching first responders how to protect themselves and the public when working near traffic. Quicker, safer responses mean fewer crashes and injuries.

TIMS help clear roads faster. When responders use coordinated strategies, traffic gets moving again sooner. That means less waiting in backups and fewer delays for everyone.

TIMs brings together multiple agencies that often work side-by-side during emergencies, helping them understand each other’s roles and improve communication.

TIMS save lives, time and money. Every improved response helps prevent additional crashes, saves taxpayer resources, and ensures emergency workers and motorists make it home safely.

How It Helps the Community

  • Reduces traffic congestion after crashes
  • Improves emergency response times
  • Prevents “secondary” crashes caused by backups
  • Builds stronger partnerships among public safety and transportation agencies
  • Makes Alabama roads safer for everyone who uses them
