The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) is opening the new Pump House Road Bridge as work continues to widen US-280 between Homewood and I-459.
Starting Friday night, March 6, weather permitting, traffic will shift from the old bridge onto the first phase of the new structure over US-280.
In November, crews closed lanes to install the first three of five girders for the new span.

The next bridge replacement phase, and continued US-280 widening below, requires the previous bridge’s demolition
Beginning Sunday, March 8 at 7 p.m., the contractor will use their ongoing nighttime closures through Thursday, March 12 to remove the old bridge’s decking. All lanes will be open each following morning at 6:00 a.m.

Demolition work will continue during similar nightly lane closures between March 15-19.
Then during the weekend of March 20-22, crews will close all lanes of US-280 traffic at Pump House Road to complete the demolition.
These closures will mirror those used to install the initial girders in November.

ALDOT will release more specific details on timing and recommended detours over the coming days.
The widened design of the highway is set to open to traffic by October 1.
