An Alabama Department of Transportation access management project along US-231 in Wetumpka, will begin Monday, April 6, weather permitting.

The access management project will begin at Charles Avenue and end at South Main Street.

The project will limit some turning movements along the corridor utilizing concrete islands and install a U-Turn bulb just south of South Main Street.

Access management increases safety and efficiency of a corridor by reducing conflict points

Motorists should expect lane closures and reduced speed limits throughout the project. ALDOT urges drivers to plan accordingly and remain cautious around people and equipment in the work zone.

ALDOT awarded the approximately $1.2 million project to Wiregrass Construction Company, Inc., of Dothan, for submitting the lowest bid. The contractor expects to complete the project in fall 2026.

ALDOT presented the project to the public as two phases in January 2023.  The department completed the first phase from Old Montgomery Highway to Charles Avenue in 2025.
