Work to improve operations at several intersections on SR-35 in Fort Payne will begin this week.
The nearly $5 million project with contractor Wiregrass Construction extends about 1.7 miles from Dewyer Avenue to Prestwood Drive.
Intersection improvements
The project will make improvements to the SR-35 intersections with Jordan Road/Airport Road, the I-59 interchange ramps at Exit 218, and Briarwood Avenue.
The planned improvements include:
- Traffic signal upgrades
- Construction of an auxiliary lane on SR-35 northbound from I-59 southbound to Medical Center Drive
- Construction of an auxiliary lane on SR-35 southbound from west of Jordan Road to I-59 southbound
- Addition of a right turn lane from SR-35 northbound to I-59 northbound

Work begins this week
Signal subcontractor Shoals Electric will start drilling for foundations for signal poles, as weather permits. That work will take place during the day, but ALDOT anticipates no interruptions to traffic during daytime.
Following signal pole relocations, Wiregrass will begin excavation and widening. To reduce traffic impacts, ALDOT requires lane closures on the project take place between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m., Sunday nights through Thursday nights.
ALDOT anticipates construction taking about a year.
