The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) has opened the new widened configuration of US-280 this week.
The upgraded four-lane section boosts capacity between Shades Creek Parkway (SR-149) to I-459.

The contractor opened both directions of the upgraded US-280 between SR-149 and I-459 early on Thursday, September 10.
This $53 million project, which kicked off in May 2025, will increase the capacity of the three-mile section of US-280 by a third.
Currently nearly 100,000 motorists travel between Homewood and I-459 daily.

In addition to the widened travel lanes, ALDOT also resurfaced one mile of US-280 between I-459 and the Cahaba River.
Further improvements include:
- New, widened Pump House Road bridge
- Third left turn lane from US-280 west to I-459 south
- Third through lane on US-280 west across I-459
- Resurfacing from Rosedale Drive to Shades Creek Parkway (SR-149)

Most of the additional upgrades should be completed by early October, followed by the opening of the finished Pump House Road bridge later this fall.
ALDOT would like to thank the cities of Homewood, Vestavia Hills, Birmingham and Mountain Brook for their support during this ongoing widening project. The public’s patience as we continue to improve US-280 for the future is also greatly appreciated.
