The Alabama Department of Transportation has opened a new triple left turn from US-280 westbound onto I-459 southbound Wednesday, October 28.

The improvement is part of the overall US-280 widening project between Lakeshore Drive and I-459 in Jefferson County.  The new four-lane configuration opened to traffic in September.

The contractor is also working to finish the widened Pump House Road bridge over the highway in Mountain Brook.

Construction of the wider Pump House Road bridge is nearing completion.

More than 50,000 vehicles travel westbound on US-280 over I-459 daily.  The additional left turn will help move more traffic off the highway onto I-459.

To make room for those vehicles entering the interstate, a new traffic signal was also installed for US-280 eastbound traffic entering I-459 southbound.

A new traffic signal for US-280 eastbound traffic entering I-459 southbound is now active.

In addition, ALDOT will soon build an auxiliary lane on I-459 between US-280 and Acton Road.  This is designed to decrease congestion from US-280 traffic merging onto I-459 southbound.

Planning is in its final stages, with the work lasting about a month once it begins.  The project will require weekend lane closures on I-459.

More details will be released closer to construction.
