Following the Labor Day weekend, the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) has opened the newly widened I-59 northbound lanes to traffic in Trussville.
Motorists can now enjoy an additional third lane between I-459 and Chalkville Mountain Road, which should reduce congestion in the area. Daily, nearly 63,000 motorists travel that 3.5-mile section of I-59 in northeast Jefferson County.
ALDOT opened the widened southbound lanes to traffic last November.
In addition to the newly widened I-59 configuration, ALDOT is reopening the US-11 ramp onto I-459 North (see map above).

It has remained closed since January allowing the contractor to safely build the new bridge over Edwards Lake Road.
They also finished upgrading the northbound ramps at Exit 141 (Chalkville Mountain Road) within the 40-day incentive window earlier this year.
The entire $70 million project is scheduled for completion by Spring 2027.
Moving forward, the contractor must still complete the following:
- Overhead sign installation
- Paving and final grading on I-59 northbound
- Final asphalt layer on I-59 southbound
- Resurfacing on I-459 between just south of US-11 up to I-59 interchange
