The next phase of I-59 widening project in Trussville will affect daily commutes early next week. The upcoming I-59 lane shift will start on the evening of January 6, 2026, weather permitting.
ALDOT is moving traffic to the outside lanes to kick off the job’s northbound construction.
This will impact traffic in the area in three significant ways.
- First, I-59 northbound will narrow to one lane at I-459 until traffic joins the temporary shifted outside lane just past the juncture.
- Second, US-11 traffic traveling onto northbound I-459 will be unable to merge left to take I-59 southbound to Birmingham.
- Finally, I-459 northbound traffic exiting onto I-59 northbound will drop down to one lane.

US-11 drivers are urged to find an alternate path to Birmingham and northbound motorists on I-59 and I-459 should expect delays.
These temporary traffic changes could last up to three months. There are also plans to close both northbound Chalkville Mountain Road (Exit 141) ramps for 40 days in Spring 2026.
Once the lane shift begins, the contractor has eight months to open the widened northbound lanes to receive a $1 million incentive.
In November, they opened the widened southbound lanes a week before the incentive deadline.

The entire $70,377,212.87 project should be complete by Spring 2027.
ALDOT wants to thank motorists for their ongoing patience during this next phase of this highly impactful interstate project.
