ALDOT plows loose ice from US-43 near the Tennessee state line in Lauderdale County on Saturday, Jan. 24. Ice that forms on wet pavements as temperatures drop may be much more difficult to remove.

Plummeting temperatures across North Alabama will pose a significant and widespread threat of icy roads this afternoon and throughout the night. The threat may extend into Tuesday for many northern counties, where temperatures are forecast to remain below freezing Monday.

ALDOT will close I-59 between Reece City and Collinsville and divert traffic Friday to allow the contractor reconstructing I-59 southbound to make needed repairs to the northbound roadway.

About 17 miles of I-59 in northern Etowah County and southern DeKalb County will close Friday, Dec. 19, for repairs.

A significant segment of the southbound roadway between Reece City and Collinsville is being reconstructed by contractor Vulcan Materials. During the project, both directions of traffic have been sharing the northbound roadway.

ALDOT opened bids today for replacement of the 88-year-old US-43/US-72/Mitchell Boulevard bridge over SR-20 in Florence.
