The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) is proposing bridge replacements on I-59 over both Big Canoe Creek and Muckleroy Creek in St Clair County.

Both sets of spans were built in the 1960’s and their deterioration and narrow width require replacement.

The I-59 bridges over Big Canoe Creek are scheduled for replacement in 2027.

The proposed work would construct wider structures on their current alignments.

The new bridges over Big Canoe Creek would feature two 12-foot travel lanes with 15-foot shoulders.  The Muckleroy Creek spans would offer identical travel lane widths and 8-foot shoulders.

Each day, about 26,000 vehicles travel this stretch of I-59 between Springville and Ashville.

During the separate construction projects, only one lane will remain open in each direction at both locations.

The two proposed bridge upgrades are currently scheduled to begin by Summer 2027, with construction lasting up to 24 months.

Separate online public involvement presentations for both the Big Canoe Creek and Muckleroy Creek bridge replacements offer a chance for public input. We encourage the public to take time to review those details and submit their thoughts by September 18.
